Today we are on our way to Chiang Mai. The land outside any major cities is haunting and beautiful. There are sections of jungle, devoid of any optimistic palm trees that remind me of the visual perceptions I’ve created from reading literature about Vietnam and the Vietnam War. Massive amounts of green, all shades from neon greens to the deep green that I imagine can swallow life. But there are other colors, red and yellows blooming from flowers and fruit. The mountains are unlike anything I’ve ever seen, the beauty of misty mountains depicted in Chinese calendars are the closest unreal visual representation of what I am seeing now. Layers and layers of blue, fading away, the tops of mountains are worn and rounded, unlike our North American pointed giants. There really is a mist that surrounds these mountains, like in paintings, even in the middle of the day, the humidity maintaining the blanket around these rounded peaks, it is so beautiful. I really love these images I’ve stained to the inside of my eyelids.
In between watching outside through the bus windows, when the wilderness allows, I watch the shows and movies Adam gave me on little red. This makes my heart ache.
On our way into the town we dropped Alex off at Eagle One, whose accommodations we’d come to envy. Our guesthouse turned out to be unexpected and disappointing, the staff are scroungy and no one I want to trust worth the distance I can throw them. Within our first half hour we were introduced to the notorious Irishman who drinks much much rum and drunkenly sleeps out on the outdoor couch instead of his room, and to the signs along the stairwell that read “if bringing in a man or woman for night please pay extra 150baht,” to which Elena dubbed our guesthouse The Whore House. Our room proved to be comparable to what I’d expect a whore room would look like. Truthfully it was simple and gross, stained bedding and bizarre dirt smudges midlevel along every wall of the room.
We did our best to stay out of our room; we went with Alex to the night market where we found all kinds of cheap goods. It was a lovely night.
