Finally some internet

Tuesday 5 2010

Thailand smells like incense, sandalwood and sweet curries. The air is thick and constantly warm.

After leaving baggage claim came the first of thousands of sale pitches that we were to hear in less than 24 hours. We signed on for a tour of temples for the next day that cost each of us a solid 5 dollars, what seemed to be a great deal. Little did we know what terror would be “Nancy.”

We made our way into Bangkok via meter taxi, and through tall buildings and street lamps turned dirty streets with outdoor eating and neon neighborhoods was the exterior of our colorful and modern neon Pratunam city inn hotel. More shocking than the nighttime socialites were the stranded and unsprayed/neutered shasty dogs of Bangkok, barking at us like we were the devil.

Dear Finke, I thought you should know that since God has an impeccable sense of humor it was only appropriate that we were welcomed into our hotel room by two petite cockroaches scurrying across the floor, and what was to be my bed. As you can imagine the panic of Elena erupted. The first night ended with internal tears as we had always known what to expect, but having experienced firsthand what we knew was coming, we were disheartened.
